Our Graphic Design Workshop with Winstanley College

Encouraging Creative Careers

Recently, our designer Fiona had the pleasure of speaking at Winstanley College as part of National Careers Week, a nationwide initiative designed to help young people explore future career paths and connect with professionals from different industries. The week aims to inspire students and give them insight into the wide range of opportunities available after education.

Fiona was invited to run both a talk and a creative workshop, sharing her own experiences working in the creative industry and encouraging students to consider careers in design.

Shaping the Future

Fiona’s talk focused on her personal journey into graphic design and the creative industries. Like many people starting out, she didn’t have a perfectly mapped-out career path. Instead, it was shaped by hard work and persistence.

One of the key messages Fiona wanted students to take away was the importance of work placements, internships, and real-world experience. In creative industries especially, getting your foot in the door often comes down to demonstrating initiative, building a portfolio and learning from hands-on experience.

These early opportunities can be transformative to young creatives. They expose you to real briefs, real clients, and the collaborative nature of creative work, things you simply can’t fully replicate in a classroom.

Typographic Workshop

After the talk, Fiona ran a typographic workshop with the students that explored exactly this kind of thinking.

Each student was given a single word and asked to illustrate the meaning of that word purely through typography. Rather than drawing literal images, they had to manipulate the form of letters themselves to express the concept.

The exercise was designed to mimic the early stages of a logo design brief, where designers must translate abstract ideas into simple, memorable visuals.

Delivering Value

Events like this are a reminder of how valuable it is for students to hear directly from people working in industry. Colleges increasingly invite professionals to run talks and workshops precisely because they help students connect education with real-world careers.

For our designer Fiona, it was incredibly rewarding to see students engage with design thinking, ask thoughtful questions, and start to imagine themselves in creative careers.

The creative industries thrive on fresh perspectives, curiosity, and bold ideas and it’s exciting to see the next generation beginning their journey.
